What's The Bible About?

I recently saw a church’s upcoming sermon series advertised in a coffee shop. Part of the ad implied that the particular Bible chapter they’d be covering is about “help for how to live life when life gets you down.”

Now, it’s true that God uses the Bible to help us live life. However, that’s not what it’s about... not mainly. Don’t get me wrong, God certainly offers help to his people in the pages of Scripture to live life. And the Bible does teach us about us. But that’s not the main thing the Bible is about. While the Bible certainly instructs, it’s not mainly an instruction manual. It’s not primarily about helping us to live life when life gets us down. Well, then, what is it about? The short answer: Jesus! The Bible is not about us and what we need to do. Rather, the Bible is primarily about Jesus and what he has already done.

“Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, [Jesus] interpreted to [his disciples] in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself” (Lk.24:27).

“You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me” (Jn.5:39).

Tim Keller (Pastor of Redeemer Pres. Church in New York) speaks to these things in a stirring video linked below. Take a few minutes to check it out.
